From Tea Estate to Empowerment - Visiting Pragati in Coonoor
The Nilgiri Hills in South India are where some of our teas come from. On a visit to the area a few years ago, we had the chance to see a project that has stayed with us ever since.
Tucked away in the town of Coonoor, the hub of the Nilgiri tea trade, is the Pragati Vocational Training Centre. Pragati means progress. The centre was set up by the wife of a tea estate manager and runs out of a converted tea warehouse, teaching skills like knitting and sewing to women who want to build lives outside the tea estates.
What struck us most was the philosophy behind it. Mrs Kumar, who runs the centre, believes that every person is worthy of respect regardless of gender or background, and that giving women practical skills is one of the most concrete ways to act on that belief. In a region where women's economic independence has historically been limited, the work being done here is genuinely significant.
It's a reminder that tea is connected to communities and livelihoods in ways that go well beyond the cup. When you buy good tea from places you trust, that chain of connection matters.
Our Nilgiri teas are on the website if you'd like to try them.
Until next time, The Bellevue Team
