How to Set Up a Proper British Tea Party

There's something quietly brilliant about a tea party. No elaborate equipment needed, no complicated menu - just a good pot of tea, something to eat, and a bit of time to sit down together.

A few things that make it work well:

The tea: Offer two or three options if you can. A good breakfast tea for those who like something strong, an Earl Grey or Darjeeling for something more fragrant, and a herbal option for anyone avoiding caffeine. Brew each in its own pot if possible, so everyone gets a fresh cup.

The food: Keep it simple. Sandwiches, scones, a cake. The tea is the main event and the food is there to go alongside it, not compete with it.

The kit: A teapot that holds at least a pint, a strainer, proper cups if you have them. A tray, a tea cosy if it's cold. That's really all you need.

The pace: Don't rush it. The whole point of a tea party is that it takes a little longer than a quick coffee.
