The basket shape is the point. Loose leaf needs room to open up, and a wide basket gives the leaves space to move rather than packing them tight the way a ball or a scoop does. You get a fuller cup from the same leaf.
Fine perforations let the water through while keeping the leaf where it belongs. It sits in a mug or a pot, lifts out cleanly, and rinses in seconds.
